Christopher Brayne has been Director of Music Ministry since May 2017. Born in the UK, Christopher began his career as a chorister at Lichfield Cathedral and studied at the Royal College of Music and Cambridge University, where he was Organ Scholar of Emmanuel College. He was appointed Assistant Organist at Wells Cathedral and from was an Organist and Master of the Choristers to Bristol Cathedral. Prior to arriving in USA, he held the positions of Director of Music at All Saints Parish Church, Odiham,and Staff Accompanist and School Organist at Downe House School for Girls.
Chris is a remarkable musician who has an international reputation, a strong faith in Jesus Christ and a working knowledge and love of the liturgy of the Anglican Church. Chris enjoys working with all ages, and his role as Director of Music Ministry extends well beyond the organ bench and rehearsal hall. He is an active member of the Diocese of Long Island’s church music community, and has a special interest in music outreach ministry. Chris has a fantastic sense of humor, which adds to the joy that is at the heart of all we do at St. John’s. Chris loves to teach and continues to cultivate our choristers’ who have a wide range of musical abilities.
Through the years, St. John’s has enjoyed a wonderful tradition of inspiring choral music, and now as we turn the page to begin a new chapter in our long history, we are excited to welcome and support Chris as he works to develop a music education program for children, youth, and adults.
• Chris received a Master of Arts degree from the University of Cambridge in 1978, and was awarded the prestigious organ performance diploma as an Associate of the Royal College of Music.
• Previously, he served from 1983-1990 as the Assistant Organist at Wells Cathedral, and later was the organist and master of the choristers at Bristol Cathedral from 1990-1998.
• This will be his second American church, as previously he served 11 years as the Director of Music and Organist at the 5,000 member Christ Church (Episcopal), Charlotte, North Carolina from 2000- 2011.
